English for Academic Purposes

Courses in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) offer intensive language instruction designed for non-native speakers of English. Courses include the following:

Speaking and Listening:

This course will give students practice in the appropriate usage of idioms and expressions and phonetic patterns in spoken English. Students will practice both listening comprehension and conversational patterns through individual and group presentations. 

English Pronunciation:

This course is equipped to give students the necessary skills to proximate the spoken language of Stand American English. Topics will range from discrete, individuals sounds of letters and words to the holistic concepts that encompass sentences and phrases.

Academic Reading:

Students develop the ability to comprehend and interpret authentic college-level texts in content areas by applying appropriate reading strategies. The course includes a vocabulary-building emphasis while also introducing students to databases and other research tools.

Academic Writing and Grammar:

This course will develop the student's ability to use complex grammatical structures appropriate to writing academic presentations, discussions, essays and basic research papers, with an emphasis on accuracy, clarity, and cohesiveness, as well as execute other academic writing tasks.

Prerequisites

EAP classes are our college’s highest academic language courses for non-native speakers of English. It is expected that students registering for any of  these classes have a strong foundation in English.

  • For in-state residents, a valid Florida high school diploma or completion of the highest adult ESOL level, and/or permission of chairperson. Out-of-state citizens may be required to take a standardized placement test.
  • For F-1 Visa students, placement level is determined by a standardized or in-house assessment, provided students meet further criteria as stated on the link below.
